Dry red wine

Organic

“Caligo”, the mist that rises from the sea along the steep slopes, is the name of our first red wine. From the lowest terraces of the farm, facing south-southwest and swept incessantly by the sea breezes and the sun throughout the day, comes a wine that expresses its dark and juicy fruit of mulberries and wild blackberries without any heaviness, and accompanies it with a youthfully playful tannin.

All the vineyards face the sea, between 350 and 450 meters above sea level, and are cultivated on terraces reclaimed from abandonment using the methods and practices of biodynamic agriculture.

The varieties that make up the Caligo 2022 red wine are Granaccia, also known in the Mediterranean as Grenache or Cannonau, and Canaiolo. The manual harvest of the two varieties takes place at the same time in order to enhance the aromatic and gustatory complexity of the wine through a careful co-fermentation, which in 2022 was preceded by a maceration on the skins for 5 days with the presence of part of the stems.

The yeasts and bacteria are indigenous and contribute to a spontaneous fermentation that does not use any type of additives during either vinification or aging, with the exception of a minimal addition of sulfur dioxide before bottling to ensure the wine's shelf life during travel and time.

The soils of the Cinque Terre are the result of an ancient dialogue between the earth, the sea and all the forces that inhabit these elements. The vocation of the territory for the cultivation of the vine is well-established, for centuries man has recognized in these soils, rich in trace elements, a unique terroir for wines of great quality.

The terraces are the most important landscape element of this territory that faces completely onto the sea. The soils are mainly formed by sandstone, i.e. compact or stratified sand. These are pedological formations in which the vine roots are destined to go very deep, even for several meters, finding a unique relationship with the elements of the earth. In the long dry summers, the roots find shelter in the deeper, more humid horizons of the soil, while in times of heavy rain, the same soils guarantee a great drainage capacity. The differences between the various individual terraces in terms of limestone, clay content and the depth of the bedrock build up the variability of the terroir of which the vineyard becomes the best interpreter, through the production of expressively polychromatic grapes from a taste and olfactory point of view.
